Earthquakes!

On Christmas night, I was sleeping soundly until shaking of the entire building suddenly awakened me.  We all woke up and determined that the shaking must have been an earthquake.  I have never been in an earthquake before and was very scared!  I woke up two more times during the night to small earthquakes.  I barely slept after that, picturing the building crashing down on me!  In the morning, the receptionist at the hotel told us that these are still aftershocks from the big earthquake September and they may continue to have aftershocks for up to a year.  We felt two more earthquakes in the morning and at the airport.  We later heard there was quite a bit of damage downtown during the quake that we felt at the airport (4.9).  After all this, I was quite happy to leave Christchurch.

After our time in Christchurch, we flew to Auckland and spent one night there.  We drove into the city, walked around, went to mass, and ate dinner at a restaurant at the harbor.  The following morning, we walked around again and shopped a bit downtown.  The harbor area was very pretty and I enjoyed seeing the city.

Merry Christmas from NZ!!

Here is a little update on my trip- sorry no pics yet!

Merry Christmas to you!  I am a little sad not to be home for Christmas this year, however I think my adventures will make up for it.  New Zealand is absolutely amazing!!!  Kara, Jodi (her mother), and I flew into Christchurch on Tuesday.  We arrived late and were completely exhausted from traveling so we went straight to bed.  The next morning we work up bright and early to drive south to Milford Sound.  I have heard this is an amazingly beautiful area that we absolutely must visit.  It was quite a long drive (10 hours) but we decided it was likely worth it.  The drive was incredible- mountains, lakes, flowers, rolling hills, beautiful skies, multiple rainbows, 10000’s of Sheep, and so much more.  We stopped many times along the way to take pics and look at the beautiful scenery.  We went to Lake Tekapo- which was indescribably gorgeous. Due to mineral deposits in the, it is the most turquoisey blue color I have ever seen.  There is a stunning tiny church overlooking the lake which was also amazing.  We continued on to Queenstown, stopping in some cute towns along the way.

We did not spend much time in Queenstown but it was very cute and reminded me of a mountainous village.  We continued to Te Anau where we spent the night in a nice little motel lodge.  In the morning, our tour bus picked us up and drove to Milford Sound.  We decided to take a bus because the 2 hour drive is rather cliff and scary.  We learned that it is one of the world most dangerous drives in the winter because of avalanches.  The avalanches cause wind bursts over 300km/hour and the wind alone uproots enormous trees.  The drive was pretty incredible.  Unfortunately, it was a bit overcasty and foggy, but still stunning.  It rains 7 meters/year in Milford Sound so one should expect a bit of rain.  When we arrived, we went on a boat tour in the fiords, which are mountains that raise right up out of the water.  The boat cruise was incredible- the mountains, 100’s of waterfalls, and seals.  We were all freezing too!  I never expected New Zealand to be so cold, but it was probably in the 40s down south.  After the boat cruise we headed back, stopping many times along the way.  We stopped and walked through a wooded rain forest area.  There were incredible trees, tons of moss, giant ferns, and many other plants.  At the end of the trail there was a huge waterfall!  My other favorite stop was at Monkey River.  This was a fresh spring water stream that our bus tour guide said is 99% pure.  We drank right out of the stream and I even filled up a water bottle to drink later.  It was the coldest, freshest water I have ever tasted!!  When we returned to Te Anau, we left fairly soon after to start driving back.  We drove for a few hours to a town called Wanaca where we found another cute little place to stay.  Unfortunately, we could not stay long in the morning because we had to make it back to Christchurch by 3:00 to pick up Jon (Kara’s fiancĂ©) from the airport.  We made some more stops in little towns, shops, and beautiful scenes on the way.  Although the drive was long, it was sooo incredible and enjoyable.  I have never seen so much beauty in my life!!

On Christmas eve, we went to Christmas Mass, which was nice, but not the same as home.  We then walked around town for a bit and went out for a delicious Asian dinner.  I ate some seafood noodle soup- yum!  After dinner, we were walking around town and heard some Christmas carols.  We found an outdoor Christmas carol concert with 100’s of people singing and listening to the band.  We all held candles and sang along.  I was so happy to find this, because it made it feel a bit more like Christmas.

On Christmas, we went to Akora, which is a French town on the Bank’s Peninsula about 1 ½ hours away.  We went on a harbor cruise and saw sooo many Hector Dolphins, which are the smallest and rarest in the world.  They are also quite friendly and would come right up to the boat.  The scenery was beautiful- mountains, rolling hills, cliffs, seals, penguins, birds, and fish.  We were so lucky and Jesus must have been watching out for us on his birthday because when we arrived, we were completely out of gas, and NOTHING was open on Chirstmas.  The boat driver took Kara and Jon to the Gas station and filled the car up where they get gas for the boats!  In the afternoon, we went to the beach and walked along, watched the tide come in, and picked up seashells.  It was soo much fun and a great Christmas away from home.  I hope everyone at home has a wonderful and happy day!!!

Goodbye Freo!

I am so sad to leave and will really miss living in Fremantle and all the people we have become close with.  On a positive note, I am excited to start my traveling!  We leave tomorrow night for Christchurch New Zealand.  In New Zealand, I will travel with Kara, Jodi, and Kara’s fiancĂ© John (who will meet us there on Christmas Eve).  We fly to Melbourne on December 27 and to Sydney on the 30th .  I will get to enjoy a Sydney New Years Eve and watch the fireworks at the Sydney Harbor Bridge! I return home on January 4, 2011.  I’m sure I will have lots of pictures and stories- so I will try to update at least once during or after my traveling!

In case I do not speak with you, have a Happy Christmas!!!

The Final Weeks

The past two weeks have been quite busy finishing work, enjoying our last bit of time in Freo, and wrapping things up.  Last weekend, we shopped around Fremantle, went to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra outdoor concert in Perth, went to Benny’s (our fave Freo bar) with Jay, and went to the Beach on Sunday.  Kara’s mother, Jodi arrived Sunday afternoon to spend the last week with us before traveling

I finished my final week of work- and passed :)  Although I was ready to be finished, I am a bit sad to leave.  I really enjoyed working with the children and think I will look for jobs in pediatrics when I graduate.  All the therapists were wonderful and taught me so much about OT.  On Thursday, we had an OT Christmas lunch at The View.

Thursday afternoon, we went to King’s Park again so Jodi could see the lovely views.

Friday evening, Julie, Kara, Jodi and I went to Little Creatures for dinner and some drinks to celebrate the end of our fieldwork.  We drank our favorite Pipsqueak Cider and had surf and turf (Octopus and Kangaroo).  On Saturday, we returned to Rottnest Island (where we went our first weekend).  We were a bit annoyed by the intense wind and heaps of flies in the morning, but the afternoon was much better.  We spent time at multiple beautiful bays/beaches and swam in the crystal clear water.  We were so happy that the weather was perfect so Jodi could enjoy the beautiful island.

Saturday evening, Jay came over and we went to Benny’s for one final night in Freo.  We had such a great time and were sad to say goodbye to some great new friends.  I think Kara, Julie, and I will have to plan a reunion and come back soon!

Today, we enjoyed an amazing experience taking a painting class from Neta, an aboriginal woman.  She taught us about various tribal symbols and the meanings behind them.  My painting has symbolic meanings of my family, which I will explain at home :)  It was quite interesting to learn about the aboriginal culture and Nita’s experiences.

Margaret River

This past weekend took a trip to Margaret River, a wine region 3ish hours south of Fremantle.  We 'hired' a car and Julie drove us early Saturday morning (on the LEFT side of the road).  She did a terrific job and never crashed!  I did attempt driving to church on Sunday morning, which was pretty exciting.  When we arrived in the region, we stopped in a few nearby towns to go to galleries and look at the beaches.  We checked into our cute Bed and Breakfast called Bridgefield guest house and walked around the Margaret River town.

Later, we drove further south to see the Leeuwin Light House.  This is the most southern point of Western Australia and the point where the Indian Ocean and the Southern Oceans meet.

Beautiful clouds
The weather was a bit crazy- raining on and off.  Because of this, we did see multiple rainbows!

Later, we went searching for Kangaroos, which come out around sunset.  We drove to a golf course and found some eating the grass.  I walked quite close to them!

On Sunday, we woke up early to go on the BushTucker Wine Tour.  I was soo excited because I have always wanted to do a wine tour.  We went to 4 wineries, a brewery, a chocolate factory, and a cheese factory.  It was a wonderful day!!

We ate lunch at the Knotting Hill Estates.  Our tour guide asked for volunteers to eat a Witchity Grub.  Julie and two men volunteered so she ate 1/3 of this! Yuck!

Monday morning, we went to a few more vineyards before coming home.  It was quite an enjoyable weekend and I wish we could have stayed longer.  Now I am getting excited for more traveling at the end of my trip!

Australian Thanksgiving Weekend

On Friday night, Kara, Julie, and I went to Little Creatures, a local brewery and restaurant, for Katie's going away party.  Katie was the senior OT where we work, and is now moving to London.  She has been so helpful teaching us and answering our questions.  Everyone is really going to miss her!
This Saturday, Julie, Kara, and I hosted the first Australian Thanksgiving.  We spent a couple days preparing the feast- Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry relish and fluff, and more pumpkin and apple pies.  Toby made the most delicious green bean salad and Jay made some homemade iceceram.  Our friends came over to help finish cooking, watch some American Football (which Toby so nicely downloaded), listen to Christmas music, and watch some cricket (which is a bit more Australian).  Everything turned out surprisingly well- we expected as least a slight disaster trying to cook in our strange oven.  We even ate at the exact time we originally estimated- 2:00pm! We had a wonderful feast and ate until we were way too full!  After eating, we all laid down for a traditional Thanksgiving rest.  We watched A Christmas Story- which none of the Aussies had seen before.  After our rest, we walked to a nearby park and played a little cricket.  It was quite fun, even though I am not the most athletically inclined :)   We were exhausted from the long day of festivities, and stayed in for the rest of the night.

Sunday morning, we work up early to catch a train to Cottesloe Beach.  We relaxed in the 85 degree weather, watching the waves crash on the shore.  There were lots of people having surfing lessons, competing in races, and dogs trying to swim.  Kara and I went on a long walk on the beach, enjoying the scenic views.  When we returned, Julie pointed out two dolphins swimming ~100 meters off the shore!  They swam very close to people who were snorkeling on the reef.  It was amazing and I wish I would have been out further in the water!  This afternoon, we hung out at home, worked on some reports for work, and went to church.  It was a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!
